LIQUOR AFTER HOURS.
OFFENCES AT PAPAKURA. MAGISTRATE IMPOSES FINES. BARMAN AND LICENSEE. As a result of a visit paid by tli'e police to a Papakura hotel about-9 p.m. on May 21, four men were charged in the Papakura Police Court to-day with being on licensed premises after .hours. They were Edward Leyden and Ancell Lloyd, who were each fined 30/, and Norman Craig and Dennis Farrell, who were each fined £1. The last-named two, it was stated, were drinking lemonade when the poliee entered.
A charge of supplying liquor after hours was preferred against, the barman, Bruce Attwell, and the licensee, Hugh Arnold Pollock. A charge was also brought of keeping the premises open for the sale of liquor when they should have been closed.
Constable Holland said <iat, when he was standing opposite the hotel, he saw four men enter the yard and so up the back stairs. He followed, and found them in a small office upstairs. Only Leyden and Lloyd were drinking beer. Attwell was supplying the liquor. The licensee was absent at the time. Attwell gave no explanation.
Counsel for the licensee 6aid the position of the licensee was that the barman had no instructions to serve liquor and did not even possess the keys of the bar, the liquor supplied to the men on the occasion being obtained from a locker , upstairs which was for the convenience of boarders. All the living accommodation was upstairs. The barman exceeded his authority in serving anyone but boarders.
Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., inflicted fines of £5 and costs of 10/ on Attwell, and on the charge of selling liquor after hours Pollock was fined £5 and costs 10/. On the charge of keeping his premises open for the sale of liquor he was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 10/. " '
