INDIANAPOLIS RACE.

WIN TO FRED. FRAME

The local office of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company has received the following cable from the United States: "The Indianapolis race of 500 miles was won by Fred. Frame, in an eight-cylinder Miller Hartz Special. His speed averaged 104.1 miles per hour, a record for the race. The winning car, and all others to finish, were Firestone equipped." The Indianapolis race is a particularly gruelling contest, as the speedway is made of brick, and is far from smooth. On such a track, a race of 500 miles thoroughly tests the car a.nd its tyres, as well as the nerve and endurance of the driver. The race is one of the most thrilling in the world, and is the biggest American motor racing event of the year. Any driver who enters must have a machine capable of averaging at least 100 miles an hour for the whole course, and it generally happens that the first few cars are so evenly matched that a great finish results. Drivers in the Indianapolis race always make certain to fit their cars with the best available tyres, because of the rough surface of the track. They realise that a burst tyre at high speed would mean death. In the past there have been many sensational crashes during the race. Cars have skidded and overturned, and drivers have had miraculous escapes. This year's race is not only a triumph for the winning driver, Fred. Frame, but also a triumph for Firestone tyres.
