"OVER THE FENCE."

RELIEF WORKERS ON FARMS. OBJECTIONS AT WANGANUI. EMPLOYERS ABLE TO PAY?. • (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, this day. A not altogether unexpected element of jealousy has crept in among farmers of the Wangamii district through the relief workers' "over-the : fence scheme." It was stated at the Waitotara County Council meeting to-day that some farmers had complained that there were other farmers well able to pay for men without having relief workers, and that such farmers were continually running to town in their motor cars, and their sons and daughters were also running about the country in cars to dances. Mr. Cloldbury remarked that if some of the farmers did not conic to town VVanganui would very soon close up. He added that, personally', lie did not think a great many farmers employed relief workers because they wanted them, but merely to help the scheme along. Mr. Farley said that, although farmers would benefit through'increased production, they would be sure to get a "smack in the" eye" later through increased taxation.
