UNPAID RATES
NEW LYNN COUNCIL'S ACTION POSITION OF CROWN MORTGAGES. The finances of the New Lynn Borough Council have been strained for some time past owing to the non-payment of rates. year at March 31 only 55 per cent of the current rates had been paid, and the previous year the position was very little better. Working under these conditions the council has been compelled to carry an overdraft almost to the limit | and is now reluctantly compelled to go to the full extent of its statutory powers in requesting the Registrar to sell the properties in default. While this is possible in respect to properties privately owned, it is not possible in the case of properties under mortgage to the State Advances and Crown Lands Departments. At the moment a sum of £2500 is owing to the ' New Lynn Borough by owners of properties which are mortgaged to the fetate. This sum represents approximately 25 per cent of the council's : yearly income. ■ The council decided last evening to • take drastic steps in respect of these l properties where water charges had not 1 been met.
