COTTAGES AT £100 EACH.
BUILT FOR 10-ACRE SCHEME.
ASSEMBLY ON THE SITE.
This week the ten cottages that the Public Works Department ill Auckland is constructing for the use of married unemployed men who have made application for Und under the Government s ten-acre scheme will be completed. The work, which ia being done at the department's factory in Fanshawe Street, was started about two weeks ago.
The cottages arc of identical design. Each consists of a living room, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a combined kitchen and washhouse. There arc two sheet-iron chimneys, one leading down to a fireplace ill the living room and the other to a cooking range ill the kitchen. The dimensions of the living room are 14 feet by 9 feet, and of the bedrooms 11 feet by 9 feet.
A skeleton model of the design lias been erected in the factory, and this is used as a guide. Each cottage is made in pieces, which are to be transported to the site, where they can be assembled by two men within a week. The piles supporting the house are of totara, the skeleton work and boarding of matai and rimu, and the roof is of iron. All piping and other plumbing can be put together on the spot.
The chief building inspector said this morning that every endeavour has been made to keep the cost of the cottage as low as possible, and erf'ch cottage should cost only a little over £100.
