LIVE STOCK MARKETS.

THE TARANAKI VALUES. DEMAND FAIRLY ACTIVE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday. Stock markets have been active in Taranaki during the week just ended. In spite of the rather adverse weather, cold westerly gales followed 'by liaxsh frosts, stock generally appear to be in good condition. The demand for weaner heifers has lost some of its keenness and the best have realised from £1 15/ to £3. Demand for dairy heifers continues as strong as before. Prices have ranged from £4 10/ to £7 depending upon quality and condition. Compared with this time last year the demand for dairy herds has lost some of its firmness although prices realised have been on a par—from £7 to £9. Prices have been very disappointing for sound empty cows considering the keen demand in evidence; sales have rarely exceeded the range of 15/ to 25/. Practically no demand exists for run cattle. Good P \ cows have brought no more than £1 to 30/. Store bullocks £2 to £2 10/, with dull prospects and little inquiry. The expected improvement in fat cattle prices was not realised. In-lamb ewes and hoggete are m demand, particularly among store saeep. The works are operating freely and that may account for the scarcity of hoggets. Back country fanners are inquiring tor small lots of store wethers. Fat ewes have brought 10/0 and fat wethers ranged from 12/ to 14/0. Ewes in lamb to S.D. rams sold from 9/ to 11/ for four and five-year-old, and up to 13/ lor Sixtoothers. Good ewe hoggets have .brought up to 11/6, and mixed sex B,'G to 9/0; wether hoggets, 8/. The clearing sale season, lias commenced, but so far herds offered have been poor in condition with little quality, indicating a late season and shortage of fowl One significant feature of sales lias been the prevalence of a keen demand for the top quality and good-conditioned cattle. Buyers .ire not lacking, however, for the poorer sorts. Prices have shown to date a marked decline on those of last season in respect to poorer classes. In the pig market values have a rising tendency, especially for weaners and slips' as is usual during this time ottlie voar Large stores and porkers remained on a par. Weaners 7/0 to 0/6; very small, do, 3/6 to 5/0; extra good slips, 12' to 16/6: light porkers. 19/ to 20/; sows with litters, £3 to £3 5/.
