FARES ON TRAMS.
DEARER CONCESSION CARDS
PROGRESS LEAGUE'S CONCERN
"FLOATING SECTION" PROPOSAL.
Much concern is felt by the City Central Progress League on the matter of the Auckland Transport Board's decision to increase the price of tramway concession cards. On Saturday the president of the league, Mr. A. Alfred Eady, sent the following letter to the board: — "My executive views with concern the boards decision to increase the price of concession cards. While fully realising the board's difficulties at the present time, we feel that the public should lie encouraged, and not discouraged, to use our very efficient tramway system. We are of the opinion that a bold policy should have been adopted and a general reduction made in all carrying charges, as ie being done to-day by the railways, Postal Department, and other public bodies.
'•We, as the largest ratepaying organisation in the city area, urge upon your board the wisdom of reconsidering the position. It is, of course, apparent that the ratepayers of the city central area are the ones who will be* most affected should the board have to strike a rate to make good any transport deficit. We feel certain that a policy as outlined above would l)c much appreciated by users of the system, and it should, we believe, help materially to improve the present position."
Concerning the board's decision not, at the present time, to introduce a "floating section," the league has written a, further letter to the board a<> follows:
"While feeling keenly disappointed at the decision, my executive is pleased to note that the matter is only deferred. It is therefore proposed to take up the question again with the board at a later date. Frankly, my league feels that the present anomalous position Is an injustice to tramway users, particularly on the Heme Bay, - Rcmuera, Point Chevalier, Great South Road and Richmond Road routes."
