INSTANT DEATH.
CIRCULAR SAW MISHAP.
MAN STRUCK BY FRAGMENT. SECOND WORKEE. INJURED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANG AKEI, this day. A tragic accident, involving the death of one man and injury to another, occurred at Kawakawa late on Thursday afternoon. Sydney Smith -and William Diekersoa were cutting firewood on contract at a property adjoining the hospital. They were using a circular saw, driven off one of the back wheels of a motor car. It is presumed that the saw flew to pieces, as a jagged fragment struck Smith on the head, killing him instantly. Dickerson, who recently went to Kawakawa from Whangarei, was stunned for a few minutes, but not hurt seriously. The inquest was opened at Kawakawa yesterday, and was adjourned after evidence of identification had been taken. Smith, who was a local resident, had been engaged on relief work for -soma time. He had embarked on the firewood contract with a view to bettering his position. He was 27 years of age and. leaves a widow and a young family of three. Mr. McGregor, inspector of machinery, Whangarei, who returned from a Southern tour last night, left for Kawakawa this morning for the purpose of making inquires regarding the fatality.
