SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
A social evening was given by the Newton Excelsior Girls' Gymnasium Club in honour of Mise Marie Patrick. Games, dancing and competitions were enjoyed. Vocal items were rendered by Mfos Verla Hynes and Miss Ena Beadle. During the evening Mrs. Hynee, girls' gymnasium instructress, presented Mies Patrick with a bouquet. ■*■ * * * A jolly evening was spent at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. T. Grinter, of St. Andrew's Road, Epsom, when numerous friends and relations paid them a surprise visit. The dining room and drawing room were thrown into one by means of sliding doors, and the time was pleasantly spent with choruses, games and dancing. Mr. Grinter, who has been in indifferent health for some weeks, leaves shortly for an extended holiday abroad. All joined in wishing Mr. and Mrs. Grinter bon voyage. ♦ ♦#;;• A successful card party was given in the Catholic League rooms on Thursday; evening, when funds were gathered for the charity ball, which takes place this month. Tho conveners were: Mrs. T. J. Nevin, in turquoise blue ninon and rose velvet coatee; Mrs. Pilling, black ring velvet; Mrs. Crtiickshank, black panne velvet; and Miss Ada Fitzpatrick, Chinese blue chiffon. Musical and elocutionary items were rendered by Miss P. Cruickshank and Mr. Wood. The prizewinners were Mrs. London, Miss Sloman and Mr. Cooke. • • • • The Writers' Club believe in encouraging tho younger members to display their work, and these have produced a little club magazine. Tho junior members have written, illuetrated and typed the laet .iesue, which contains small articles, descriptive work and verse that show distinct promise. Many young girls incline to writing verso in their glowing years, and it is unfortunate that for lack of encouragement they often cease to pursue the work. It is to help the growing writer that the Writers' Club cxiets.
A number of friends on Thursday evening paid a surprise visit to farewell Mrs. C. M. Lello, of Birkenhead, and her daughters, the Misses Mignon and Madge Lello, who leave next week to live in Hamilton. Musical items wero given by Mrs. Norman Harris, Misses M. Shutes, Winnie Johnson and C. Williamson. Gamee and dancing were enjoyed. Mrs. W. Richardson conveyed the regret of their many friends. Amongst those present were: Mesdames Richardson, A. R Shutes, N. R. Harris, C. H. Colcgrave, R. F. Featherstone, J. G. Loekie, A. Neil, M. Saunders, Misses Shut.ee, Margaret Saunders, Lois Shutes, J. M. Meston, G. Williamson and C. Williamson.
An enjoyable At Home, held by the members of the Overseas League at their rooms yesterday, took the form of a book afternoon, each member representing a well-known book, and there were a large number taking part in the competition. The rooms were charmingly decorated for the occasion with bowls of marigolds. Miss N. Montgomery presided. The prizes for tho competition were won by Mrs. de Lange and Miss Fraser, and during the afternoon a short programme added to the enjoyment. Songs sung by Miss Olive 'WorgerThomas were "A Heart That's True" and "Love's a Merchant," and Miss. Doris Messer gave two recitations entitled "At the Academy" and "Definition of Love."
The president, Mrs. F. W. Wilkes, occupied the chair at a meeting of the N"orthcote Women's Progressive League, which was held in the Parish Hall this week. An invitation was accepted from the St. John Ambulance Association to attend the animal meeting and also the Lyceum's Club's exhibition of work. Mesdames F. W. Wilkes, D. P. O'Leary, A. Taylor and Miss L. Trpiuain were appointed to discuss with the Northcotc Ex-Servicemen's Association the question of improving tho arrangements and to make the function at the War Memorial on Anzac Day a more impressivo one. Mrs. P. Howdcn, the delegate, reported on the National Council of Women. Ah account of her holiday trip to Honolulu was given by Mrs. Helen Griffith. Musical numbers were given by Miss Edna Craig and elocutionary items by Mre. Griffith, and the dialogue, "Tea and Scandal," by Mrs. Griffith and Miss Craig.
