EPSOM TRIALS.

TROTTING CANDIDATES WORK

S:X ADAMS CUP HORSES.

CARNUI PACES WELL,

The clay track at Epsom was open this morning, aiid though slightly holding some interesting work was recorded by horees engaged at the approaching winter meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club. One of the most interesting workouts seen for some time was witnessed when six candidates for the Adams Memorial Cup lined up to go two miles. All were warmed up with, a short sprint, and they then gathered together. At the jump off Kaydus (Birkett) was slightly in front of Warspite (Julian), with Kewpie's Guy (Willetts), Kewpie's Triumph (Bell), Carnui (Smith) and Peter Pirate (Kennerley) following, Peter Pirate being about 30yds behind the leader, Kaydus. Raydus led over the first half-mile in 1.12 4-5, but a little further on Smith took Carnui to the front, and he <set a fairly solid pace. With a mile to go Carnui led Warepite and Kewpie's Triumph", with the three others close handy. As they went along the back all bunched, but Carnui was still having a little the best of it. Raydus began to drop back at the half-mile, and Carnui led into the straight from Kewpie's Guy, Kewpie's Triumph, Peter Pirate and Warspite. In the run home all were hard at it, but Carnui hung on best and beat Kewpie's Guy by half a length, with Peter Pirate a neck away. Kewpie's Triumph and Warspite were close up, with Eaydus some lengths away. It was a great workout, and Carnui made most friends. The time was 4.44, the mile and a half taking 3.37, the last half 1.7. La Triumph was too good for Prince Etawah at the end of a mile and. a quarter in 3.10, La Triumph showing a lot of speed at the finish. Fisher was not hoppled up, and was given several rounds at half pace. Dan Direct and Great Fame were jogged a couple of miles without the hopples. Little Guy worked nicely when pacing a mile and a quarter in 2.55 2-5. Miss Joan Direct was given a repeat mile and a half, and paced smoothly without making time. Explosion (trotting), Oliver Thorpe, Nathaniel and Mazda were companions over a mile and a quarter. Explosion was in the lead all the way, and beat his companions without any trouble in 2.55. Mazda, who was second, went 2.57. Oliver Thorpe paced fairly well, but Nathaniel tired badly. Moko Girl, Jester and Prince Etawah worked stout seven furlongs, Moko Girl trotting solidly. Nellota, Rolfe Audubon and Travis were associated over a mile and a quarter. Travis was always going comfortably, and had no difficulty in beating his companions in 2.50, the last half in 1.8. Realty was jogged on the sand. He was very lame. Todd Bingen and Manna's Son worked a mile and a half in 3.52, Todd Bingen being easily the better. Star Pronto was given serviceable work. L. F. Berkett arrived yesterday from the South with Raydus, Todd Bingen and Travis.
