FISH CUBEK'S OFFENCE. THEFT FROM APARTMENT HOUSE. Charged with stealing jewellery valued at £22 on May 5, Thomas Whitford (54), fish curer, appeared at the Police Court this morning. 1 Counsel eaid accused admitted taking some jewellery, but not all that was alleged. ' Mrs. G. E. Denton said Whitford used to live at the same apartment house as witness and her husband. She felt eorry for Whitford, who was in the habit of frequenting witness' apartment. Sometimes he would place the vegetables on the etove before witnese returned homo. After Whitford left ehe found that a wristlet watch, a diamond ring and an emerald ring had disappeared, also £2 10/, and two Canberra florins. A second-hand dealer gave evidence that Whitford pledged a diamond ring and wristlet watch for £1, giving his correct name and address. Detective Brady, who interviewed Whitford, produced a statement by him in which lie admitted that lie had no money and took the wristlet watch and onering when in a drunken state. It was his intention to redeem them when lie got money, and return them to Mre. Denton. He denied stealing the emerald ring. Counsel admitted that although accused had several previous convictions, he had not been in trouble for three years. "Yes but he had been in trouble a good deal prior to that," said the magistrate, who sentenced Whitford to three months' imprisonment.
