SHOPS IN REMUERA.
BASSETT AND MIDDLETON ROADS. *
TOWN PLANNERS APPROVE.
Permission has been granted by the City Council for the erection of two brick shops at the lower end of Bassett Koad, Remucra, near ite junction with iliddlcton Road. In a report on the question to last night's meeting of the council the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, submitted plans for the zoning of the surrounding residential area. In view of the fairly advanced stage of development the locality had reached, he said, and the distance, approximating half a mile from the three nearest shopping centres, provision for a shopping centre wae necessary. The junction of Basse.tt and Middlcton Roads was the most suitable location for a shopping centre, but he could not recommend that the site named in the application should be included.
The town planning committee recommended that, the proposed zoning scheme be approved, but that the shopping area as defined be extended to include the applicant's section and that the erection of the two shops be permitted, provided no by-law was infringed. This was agreed to. An application for permission to conTert a private garage in Lower Symonds Street, a little above the Grafton Road junction, into a dairy and confectionery shop was declined on the recommendation of the committee. The zoning of the locality as a gc-iieral residential district was approved.
