CONFIDENCE IN CANADA.
OTTAWA, June 9.
Referring to the Empire Economic Conference to be held at Ottawa in July, the Minister of Finance, Mr. E. N. Rhodes,-in an address to the Canadian Manufacturers' Association, said:—"We should have full faith that benefit can accrue to each component part of the Empire and to the Empire as a whole. The measure of the success of the conference will be the degree to which its discussions are approached from the point of view that there can be no advantage which is not mutual."
The president of the association, Mr. W. E. C. Coulter, said that while the conference might not produce a miracle it would constitute an epoch in history. The association was doing everything in its power to contribute to the success of the gathering.
Beferring to the diversity of interests to be represented, Mr. Coulter said compromise and conciliation were familiar traits of British character and solutions were found for most problems. He did not share the fear that Canada's natural and proper desire to promote and safeguard her own productive departments might limit the accomplishments of the conference.
"Wo do not share these misgivings," eaid Mr. Coulter, "because now it is generally accepted that each British country will promote its own development so far as that course is economic and practical."
