Strong- exception to certain statements attributed to Police Superintendent D. J. Cuminings concerning tlio part played by the police during the recent tramway strike was expressed at a meeting of the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee. The view was expressed that the superintendent's remarks were calculated to destroy confidence in the police as to their impartiality in industrial dispute*. A letter of. protest has been sent to the of Justice. It is alleged that when ho vas farewelled at Napier, Superintendent Cummings said, inter alia, "People from al! sections of the community, numbering l>loo, came forward to assist the police, and it was that which to a very considerable extent broke the back of thi; strike. They are all back at work now and sorry that the strike ever happened. As far as Canterbury and Ohristchurch are concerned there will be no further strikes."
