ATTITUDE OF OWNERS
'NEVER REFUSED CONFERENCE' REPLY TO LABOUR PARTY. (By Telegraph.—rress Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The secretary of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners' Association said today that the statement published by the national executive of the Labour pnrty was founded apparently upon complete ignorance of the facte. The mine owners had never refused a conference upon their new proposals. On the contrary, they not only agreed to a conference in each district immediately a request for a conference was made by the unions, but in the northern district a conference was begun on two occasions, and only the strike at Hikurangi prevented its continuance.
On the West Coast a conference wne agreed to, the only thing left to bo determined in respect to it being the date, and it was arranged that this should be as early as was conveniently possible. The miners elected not to wait for the conference, but ceased work.
In Southland there was no exchange of communications of any kind between the owners and the union, but the sirilo; was begun for no apparent reason._ -'i the ca<?e of the Shag Point strike, announced to-day, the men were working under the terms of an Arbitration Court award, which had not boon interfered with.
