TROTTING.

ASHBURTON MEETING. JUVENILE CLASSIC. SEVENTEEN IN SAPLING STAKES. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, thie day. The winter meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club will be held to-morrow. This is always a very popular fixture with owners, and the fact that the New Zealand Sapling Stakes will be run cives special interest to the day'e racing. Very large fields are engaged in all the events, and there should be a capital day's eport. Ashburton Handicap. There are twenty-four in the chief two-mile evcn>t, half of them being on the limit. Grand Canyon is on the improve. He finished third to Cranleigh and Impromptu in the Paparua Handicap on the second day at Addington last week, and went in 4.25. Should he be in his best racing humour on the day he will bo prominent. Great Parrish showed a lot of speed in the Pioneer Handicap last week, but failed to see out the journey. John Noble, although he won over the distance at Oam aru early last month, is now meeting stronger opposition. Sunny Bob can be relied upon to go his honest race, but Grand Light has not done well of late. Belinda was started in the mile and a quarter at Addington last woek, when she was well backed and failed. She ie a good twomiler, however, and may race well on the big course. Gold Country got third in tho Advance Handicap on the first day at Addington, and ho may just be coming right again after his mishap that prevented him from being raced at Forbury Park meeting early last month. Golden Pedro did not nice well at Addington last week, nor did Groat Logan, but Muriel de Oro, in a very fast l'ficc, was fourth in the Ivinp; George Handicap. Pluto did not race well at Arlrlington, nor did Rrrl Shadow. The final placing may br? Gold Country, Great Parrish and Grand Canyon.

Sapling Stakes. Tt is pleasing to find such a good response by owners to the two-year-old classic event, there being seventeen acceptors. The stake is a good one. and the club is deserving of great, praise for its decision to continue the race during present conditions. A number in the field have not yet started, so that their worth k an unknown quantity, but several have performed with credit nlreadv. The Ashburton owner, Mr. A. .T, N"ieoll. who was second last season with Tempest, appears to hold a strong hand with Indianapolis and Cloud.v Range, both of whom have already shown that they possess plenty of speed. Golden Direct, who is trained at Addington, has come on a lot, and is a well-grown youngster who is expected to race prominently. Another Addington-trnined candidate in Derby Thorpe can muster up a good deal of speed, and looks as though the distance may not trouble! him. Betty Jinks has speed, but her ability to go the mile and .1 half is unknown. Match King, who is trained by J. Bryce, was started at the last meeting at Oamaru, and once he settled to his work he paced in a pleasing manner. Ronald Derby, by .Nelson Derby from a Harold Dillon mare, trained by B. .Tarden, gave a pleasing work-out at Addington recently. Mary Harvester, who could not be started at the last meeting on the coursc, owing to arriving too late, is reported to bo speedy, and the Native King—Princesr Ann youngster in M. B. Edwards' stable, has a reputation. The following are likely to receive support in their engagements:— Longbeach Handicap.—Reclaim, Mataunga, Norman Fox.
