RELIEVING DISTRESS.
GXiEN EDEN SCHEME. TRADESPEOPLE CO-OPERATE. Considerable initiative is beinp; shown by the relief workers of Glen Eden in meeting the present problem of living. By arrangement with several local tradesmen relief workers may on presentation of a membership card, obtain goods a,t reduced prices. A special feature is one whereby, through the good offices of a local butcher, a carcase of beef is purchased each week and handed over at cost price, to be cut up by an unemployed butcher, weighed and distributed at cost prices. A co-operative system of buying has also been established, and coal is procured by the truck load, bagged and distributed by the relief workers themselves. The same applies to vegetables, etc. A communal garden has also been established, where vegetable plants are being raised to be distributed in the planting season.
