RACING AT ELLERSLIE.

GREAT NORTHERN MEETING. THE CONCEUBING DAY. HIGH PITCH WINS HURDLES. The Great Northern meeting was concluded at Ellcrslie yesterday in beautiful w-eathcr, and in consequence there was a good attendance. Owing to rain that fell during the previous twenty-four hours the course was very heavy, but nevertheless the racing was interesting throughout. During the day the sum of '£29,433 was put through the machine,, compared ; with £36,511 10/ for the corresponding day last season, a decrease of £7078 10/. This made a total for the meeting of £109,288, against £136,97S 10/, a decrease of £27,690 10/. An inquiry was held after the Campbell Hurdles regarding the handling of Make Up in that event, but the stewards decided to take no action. The Steeplechase. Make Up and Beau Cavalier were withdrawn from the Winter Steeplechase, for which Copey (£6SI) was favourite.,Onllain.U't carried £497, and Lucess Alul Billy Boy were equally backed, each carrying £462. At the water jump, a little over a furlong after the start. Paris was leading Lucess, Master Lu, Slump, Callama.nt, Billy Boy, Claremore, Nukumai, Kamehamelia, Wiltshire, Landmark and Copey. Paris fell at the first fence along the back, and when the field came to the double in front of the stand again Nukumai and Callamart were the leaders from Jen, Lucess, Master Lu, Billy Boy, Claremore, Copey, Kamehaineha, Landmark and Slump, with Wiltshire a long way back. Along the back Nukumai led Lucess, Jen, Callamart, Master Lu, Billy Boy, Clar'emore, Landmark and Copey. Nukumai and Callamart were together three lengths clear of the others going up the hill, but at the first fence on the hill both Nukumai and Callamart came 'o grief. Claremore fell at the second fence. The falling of the two leaders left Lucess in front, and ho showed the way down the hill from Billy Boy, Copey. Landmark and Master Lu. Lucess and Billy Boy were 'together at the head of the straight, and then Billy Boy drew away to win by four lengths from lucess, with Copey seven lengths away third. Master Lu was fourth, followed at intervals by Landmark, Slump, Jen and Wiltshire. Kamehameha refused at the last fence. Favourite Scores.

High Pitch (£S34) was favourite for the Campbell Hurdles, and getting to the front a long way from home he was never again headed. Make Up (£538) was second choice, and others to get good support were Luminary (£526) and Cruachan I £361). Arch Eagle was soon out in the had, and set the pace from Luminary and Cruachan. At the stands Arch Eagle was leading High Pitch, Luminary, Cruachan, Make Up, Easterly, Xassoek and Advance Camp in that order. Arch Eagle hit the fence in front of the members' stand hard and lost many lengths, while Advance l 'amp was pulled up going out of the fitraight. Along the back High Pitch was in charge from Cruachan, Arch Eagle. Xassoek, Luminary and Make Up. As they raced across the top Nassock was up second behind High Pitch. The latter made a bad jump at the three furlongs, >ut did not lose the lead, and he turned into the straight clear of Cruachan, Luminary, Nassock and Arch Eagle, who v.-ere racing in that order. High Pitch •.vent on, and had no difficulty in winning by three lengths from Cruachan, with Xassoek two and a half lengths away, Luminary falling at the lasit fence. Easterly was fourth, with Arch Eagle next and Make Up last. An Easy Win. Huntingdon (£785) was favourite in a good betting race, when the machine closed on the Visitors' Handicap. Chromadye carried £754, King Ford £467, and the ultimate winner, Lord Val, £460. Huntingdon was first to show out from Tradesman, Verntn and Consent, but across the top Consent was the leader from Refresher, King Ford, Lord Val, Huntingdon, Chromadyne and. Alpina. King Ford was first, into the straight from Consent, Lord Val, Refresher, Tradesman and Huntingdon. Once in line Lord Val came through, and galloping away from the field won by five lengths from King Ford, with Tradesman a neck away. Consent was fourth, and then followed All Humbug, Hampton Park, ' Royal Bengal, Refresher, The Tiger and Huntingdon.

The Carbine Plate. The programme concluded with the Carbine Plate, for which Imamint and' Kialioremai were scratched. Seneschal i £1373), Protomint (£815) and Beacon Fire (£704) were the public fancies, and they finished as selected. Seneschal was one of the quickest to begin, and led along the back from Sub-Editor, Valueloss, Woodful, Beacon Fire, Icimint, Royal Survey and Grand Spirit. Across the top Seftcschal was attended by Grand Spirit, Valueless, Sub-Editor. Woodful, Royal Survey and Beacon Fire. Seneschal was first to turn for homo from Valueless, who ran very wide. Grand Spirit, Beacon Fire and Protomint, who had come from a long way back. Seneschal went on to win by five lengths from Protomint, with Beacon Fire a neck away.
