DICKENS FELLOWSHIP.
There was an attendance of about one hundred and twenty at last "night's meeting of the Auckland branch of the Dickens Fellowship held in the League of Penwomen's Rooms. Mrs. Kenneth Gordon presided, and the programme for the evening, given under the heading, "Gems From Dickens," was in the hands of Mr. T. Clarkson. A sketch from "Bleak House," entitled "Guppy's Proposal," was presented by Mr. and Mrs. C. Wolstencroft, Miss Pickmere, Messrs. G. G. Grant and T. Vivian, and one from "Martin Chuzzlewit," "Sairey Gamp" and "Betsy Prigg," by Mrs. Gordon and Miss Chalmers. Readings were given by Miss A. Scott (Peggoty's home, "David Copperfield"), Miss Statham (Affrey's Courtship, "Little Dorrit"). Miss M. Robinson (the last of Madame Defarge, "Tale of Two Cities"), Mr. W. E. Arey (Micawber), Mr. J. B. Green (Quilp's Return, "Old Curiosity Shop"), Mr. T. Clarkson (The Wreck. "David Copperfield"). An item that was especially appreciated was a cello solo, "What Are the Wild Waves Saying?" given as a sequel to a reading by Mrs. .T. W. Kealy relating to the death of Paul Dombey.
