SMALL FARM SCHEME.
north atjckeand interest. MEETINGS TO BE CALLED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. At the annual meeting of the Whangarei County Council the small settlement scheme was explained by the local officer in charge, Mr. E. A. McKinlay. Mr. J. A. S. MacKay said that he had come to the conclusion that there were, possibilities in the sceheme. He moved that the council co-operate, and call meetings in the different ridings as desired by Mr. McKinlay. Mr. A. Clarke seconded the resolution. He foresaw many difficulties in putting the proposals into operation, but thought there was a possibility of settling a limited number satisfactorily on the land. The motion was carried. Mr. McKinlay said that committees of five should be nominated by riding members. - Mr. J. H. Hayward disagreed with this. To make the scheme a success it was necessary to arouse public interest. He would prefer the people to decide for themselves at meetings held in the ridings.
The chairman also thought that public meetings should be held, and that representation on the committee should be spread throughout the districts. It was pointed out that the Department desired the selection of the committee to be made by the councillors.
