HER MAJESTY'S BIRTHDAY.
AUCKXAND OBSERVANCES. MESSAGES OF GOOD WISHES. Flags were flown and guns were fired to-day to mark the sixty-fifth anniversary of the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Mary. The following message was sent to the Queen by the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe:— "His Majesty's Government and the people of New Zealand, with whom Lady Bledisloe and I desire to associate ourselves, tender to Your Majesty respectful congratulations and good wishes on the. occasion of Your Majesty's birthday." To mark the occasion the cruiser Diomede and the training ship Philomel were dressed, and the sloops Laburnum and Veronica, which are undergoing annual overhaul in Calliope Dock, flew mast-head flags. At mid-day a salute of 21 guns was fired from the Naval dockyard and from Fort Cautley, North Head. On the poop of the Philomel a guard of marines gave the Royal salute. In the city, flags were flown from Government offices and municipal and business buildings. Special mention of the occasion was also made in the schools.
