THEFT OF BOOTS.
YOUNG MAN SENT TO GAOL. The theft of a pair of boots valued at £1 5/ belonging to some person unknown was denied by William John Can , , a young man who appeared at the Police Court this morning. Detective Slater said he saw Carr entering a second-hand shop in Queen Street hirst Friday night with a parcel under his arm. Carr left the shop and still had the parcel. Witness accosted him and found that the parcel contained a pair of boots (produced). Carr was asked where he got them from, and ins explanations were unsatisfactory. He was slightly under the influence of liquor. Carr asked the detective if he could tell him where the boot<s were stolen from. "That's not his place to eay, the magistrate told Carr. "It is your business to prove that you came by them honestly." After perusing Carr's list, the magistrate sentenced hiru to one month's ', imprisonment.
