PAPATOETOE RATES.
REDUCED BY 10 PER CENT. RETRENCHMENT IN STAFF. A reduction of nearly 10 per cent in the rates was made by the Papatoetoe Town Board last evening. Last year's rate of 2Jd on the capital value of property was reduced to 2Jd. The board has budgeted for an expenditure of £11,340, compared with £12,347 last year, and has made provision for the payment of £3819 as interest and sinking fund charges on loans. Retrenchment in the staff lia# been necessary to reduce the expenditure on wages from £l'2f>o to £950. The principal items in the budget are £1000 for materials and royalties, £820 for tho hospital levy, £300 for street lighting nnd £800 for administration expenses. A sum of £130 has been allocated for insurance, including men under No. 5 Scheme, £180 for traffic control, £100 for the fire brigade and band and £51 for the War Memorial Museum. Arrears of rates for the past year were £2880, or 23 per cent of tho total. The board decided to grant a rebate of 5 per cent on all rates paid within one month of the date of demand.
