AUCKLAND AMATEURS.

FIXTURES. Saturday, May 21. —15-Mllc Club Handicap. New Lynn-Swanson and return, 2.;50 p.m. Sunday, May 22.—Trial Harrier v. Cyclists' Race, Avondale, 10.30 a.m. Saturday, May 28.—Harriers r. Cyclists' Contest, Avondale. Saturday, June 4.—Cycling Centre Open Handicap, 231 miles. The first flub time-trial of the season was riin on Saturday on the course at To Atatu in bright sunshine, with a moderate wind .blowing from the south. There was an unusually large crop of punctures and mechanical 'failures, the larger percentage, of the six who dropped out of the field of 16 starters doing so for those reasons. The ten who finished all performed very creditably, although most of the new riders found the altered conditions rather bewildering. Ivan Laloli (scr) again demonstrated ins ability as an unpaced rider. He drew fourteenth position at the etart, and -when half the distance had been covered he had moved up to sixth, from which place he went on to cross the line second. He had covered the 25 miles in lh 7m 255, to register fastest time. When the places on the handicaps, which had been sealed till after all the competitors had started, were worked out, it Was found that Ivan had also secured second place. The next best time was Hi 10in 40s, returned by Hugh Browne (scr), who also rode very well. He drew No. 9 starting position, and at half-way was riding third, in which position he crossed the line. His place on the handicaps came out as fourth. Ces. Johnson again came to the fore by gaining third fastest time in lh llm 595, and with his handicap of 6.0, first place. Ces. is evidently another rider who likes to get away from "the madding crowd" and ride by himself. He is doing very well for himself this season, having been up amongst the points scorers in all four starts. Bob Strntlidee started oil' with only the finishing line ahead of him, and he took good care that no one came between it and himself by setting and maintaining a real hot pace, which gave him fourth fastest time and third place with the help of a 4.0 handicap. . On Saturday week the annual contest between harriers and cyclists will be decided at Avondale. The event is being supported by the Auckland, Lynndale and University Harrier Clubs, and the Manukau Cycle Club is calling an off-day to give their members an opportunity to compete in either this race or the Papatoetoe Club's 31-mile race, according to _ fancy. Other clubs round Auckland are invited to send along representatives, and so liven up already keen competition. The course was covered by a small party of harriers and cyclists last Sunday morning, and found to be in first-class condition, and it is proposed to stage a trial race next Sunday morning, commencing at 10.30, by way of training. The Auckland Cycling Centre's second open handicap race will be held on June 4, as before over 23% miles, from Western Springs to Swanson and return. Nominations will close with club secretaries on the Saturday previous, and must be accompanied by the entry fee.
