CONDUCT AT DANCES.
TARANAKI ALLEGATION,
COUNCIL ASKS FOR PROOF,
(From Our Own Correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday
Drinking at dances was alleged by the Xaranaki Archdeaconry Board, members of which made statements which were resented by several members of the Borough Council last night. The opinion had been expreesed by members of the board that the trouble generally was caused by outsiders who went to public dance lmlls with liquor to sell, and an instance was quoted of the vending of contraceptives also. That was a very grave and startling reflection on dancers, eaid Mr. Stainton, who eaid he had heard many complaints about the statement. He did not think that the statement was true of dances in New Plymouth, but if it was, then tho trouble should be remedied. A representative from Stratford had made the definite statement, Mr. Stainton believed, and he should be in a posi tion to support it. A certain amount of liquor went to dances, they knew, but to say that there, was trafficking in liquor and contraceptives was a very serious thing. The Mayor, Mr. H. V. Griffiths, said tho council was concerned only with the licensing of halls. Mr. Stainton said the inspector of police should have investigations made. The Mayor thought that was a legitimate way to deal with it as a question of public morals. It was decided to write to the Archdeaconry Board asking whether New Plymouth was referred to in the allegation.
