Lady Chaytor and Air Pilot
Reach Australia,
DIFFERENT ROUTES TAKEN.
DARWIN, April 20.
Mr. R. T. Richards, who was Lady Cha'ytor's pilot on her long-planned flight from England to Australia, left Koepang at 3 a.m. to-day and arrived at Darwin at 12.3 p.m.
A Fremantle message states that Lady Chaytor arrived on board the Narkunda. She abandoned the flight at Calcutta owing to illness and Mr. Richards flew to Darwin alone.
Lady Chaytor set out from Lympne, Kent, on March 6, with Mr. R. T. Richards as pilot, to fly to Australia, where she intended to lecture on women's fashions and other interests, "in order to take down that 'to let' notice in front of Witton Castle, Durham." This is the twelfth-century family seat of her husband, Sir Edmund Chaytor. The 'plane, a Gipsy Moth, was fitted with a robot pilot to assist in flying through the clouds.
In an interview before she left, Lady Chaytor said, "My luggage includes a ukulele, and I intend arriving in Australia wearing a lovely flying suit of uncrushnble silk, which I chose at the British Textile Exhibition at White City. I cannot take any fashions with me, as the rear space will be filled with extra petrol tanks. I am going to fly back to England again, since I must be back in time to present my daughter at Court in June."
When landing at Sofia on the third day out, the 'plane struck a snowdrift and was damaged. The flyers, however, were not injured, and reached Constantinople on March 16. No further news regarding the flight was dispatched until the present message.
EXPECTED TO-DAY
SCOTT'S ARRIVAL AT DARWIN,
BATAVIA, April 26,
Mr. C. W. A. Scott, who left England early last Tuesday morning in his attempt to make a fresh record for the England-Australia flight, left Singapore at 3.5 a.m. to-day for Rembang.
He arrived at Batavia at 10 a.m. and left at 10.25 a.m. for Sourabaya.
A Sydney message states that advice received there to-day indicates that Mr. Scott hopes to land at Darwin on Wednesday evening by the aid of flares.
