PAPER HATS.

(By Joyce Hopkins, 199, Remuera Road.)

Procure some large sheets of paper. Newspaper is hardly stout enough; brown paper is much better, but gaycoloured papers look nicer for parties. Let each sheet be not quite square—say a quarter more one side than the other, as diagram A. Now fold as shown.

1. Halve the long edges and double the paper over so that the crease joins the two halfway joints as diagram B.

2. Bend over the two upper corners so that they meet down the middle, as per diagram C.

3. Fold the lower edges so that they double over the triangular top, one at the front and one at the back, as diagram D. The hat may be opened out and worn. It makes a nice addition if the hats are ornamented by having coloured rosettes pasted on them. The rosettes not only make splendid ornamentation, but help to keep the hats from coming undone.

An old man was brought before a magistrate on a charge of assault. During" the proceedings he was asked if he wanted a lawyer to defend him. "No, no, your honor," he replied. "I don't, want no lawyer; but I certainly would like a couple of good witnesses if you can get 'em." - ,
