LOCAL BODIES

NEW LYNN BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the Xew Lynn Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. Geo. Lawson. presided.

Titirangi Road.—The Main Highways Board forwarded authority for calling tenders for scaling the 12 chains length of macadam 22ft wide at the railway crossing on Titirangi Road, together with similar scaling for the shoulders of the concrete at the intersection of Titirangi Road and the Great Xorth Road. The council resolved to do t«e work with its own .staff, subject to the approval of the Highways Board.

No. .■> Scheme.—The Unemployment Board expressed appreciation of the council's decision to continue Xo. 5 Scheme until June 30. Representations regarding workers' compensation insurance hail been made to the board from various quarters, and the matter was now receiving full consideration.

Whau Bridge.—The Main Highways Board agreed to the concreting of the approaches to the bridge. With regard to the surface of the actual bridge, the board had no objection to the laving of a thin concrete wearing course on the ex'sting deck. The work was authorised.

Bank Interest Kates.—The Whakatano Borough Council called attention to the absence of any provision in the Adjustment Bill for the reduction of the rate of interest charged by the commercial banks operating in New Zealand. The latest banking figures available disclosed that the commercial banks had current advances totalling £.10.000,000, and reduction of the present interest rate by 1 per cent would thus directly benefit borrowers by over £500,000. To request the banks to reduce the rate to 5 per cent would not be unreasonable, and the benefit would be £1,000,000. The council was requested to ask the Government to provide for the compulsory reduction by the banks of the interest rate upon advances, in order that no class or classes escape from participation in the sacrifices involved. Full support was given to the letter.

Borough Inspector. — The borough inspector reported as follows for the year ended March 31, 1932:—Forty premises had been connected with the main sewer, and seven 'premises outside the sewerage area provided with drains. Building permits were issued to a value of £5380. Prosecutions had been taken in respect to noxious weeds and others were pending. Speeding in the borough had been checked by prosecuting the offenders, and further cases had yet to be dealt with.
