WOMEN AND WAGES.
In referring to the position of women under the Unemployment Amendment Bill, Mr. J. McCombs, M.P., said there were 107,000 women in New Zealand who would have to contribute under the Act, and of these 44,000 had private incomes. It was estimated that 167,000 women would contribute £750,000 a year. In replying, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates said that as far as the women were concerned, it was .not fair that single women without responsibilities should be exempted from contributions in time of national emergency. They were receiving benefits from women's organisations. Mr. McCombs retorted that the women's organisations did not represent the women unemployed.
