WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

I HUNTLY. I A meeting was held last Wednesday Mrs. J. Lidtlle presided. Miss Stelir gavi a demonstration on "Parss Partout.' Tlie roll call was a child's funny saying A competition, the best eggle.'is cake was won by Mrs. F. Hanley, while i novel song competition was won by Mrs Harrison. Supper was served, the host esses for the evening being Mesdamcs W Brooks and J. Rumney. MATAKOHE. The first anniversary of the Matakohi Women's Institute was celebrated las l Tuesday evening. The president, Mrs J. Deeming, presided. The evening tool the form of a social and dance. A sketch entitled, "Aunt Lizzie's Friend,' was given. During supper tlie birthdaj cake was cut and distributed. The hos tesses were Mesdames Cornish, B. Met calfe, C. Ball and W. Ball. DARGAVILLE. Mrs. C. H. Crump presided over s record gathering of members at the lasl session of the Dargaville Women's Institue. Demonstrations were given ir cake decorating by Mrs. Bagby, papier macho by Mrs. R. F. Griffin, of Ruawai and basket making by Miss Murray also of Ruawai. A competition for tlie best sponge sandwich was won by Mrs, A. L. Williams, with Mrs. E. J. Tier second. The roll call was the use tc which a lemon could be put. The hostesses were Mesdames H. Wells, E. Robinson, McCullough and Miss Drummond. MANGARATA. A meeting of the Mangarata Women's Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Morrin, when Mrs. E. G. Davidson presided. The girls' competition for floral decorations was won by Miss J. McFarlane, Miss I. Thornton being second. It was decided to get in touch with an Institute in England, with the object of exchanging ideas. A dainty lunch was served by the hostesses, Mrs. McFarlane and Mrs. Putt. A musical competition was much enjoyed, Mrs. Davidson, Mrs. Bramble and Miss C. Thornton tied for first price. Mrs. McLean contributed a song. The roll call was for a funny story. WAHAROA. Mrs. Gunn presided over the Waharoa Women's Institute meeting held on Thursday, and there was an attendance of 37. After business was concluded, at which it was decided to work for a stall at the Winter Show, Mrs. Barry, of Matamata, gave a talk on Egypt, and also showed many beautiful articles which she brought home from that country. The competition, "A Fishy Romance," was won by Mrs. Barry. Mrs. Rix, of Walton, spoke of "Flowers," and exhibited some fine chrysanthemum blooms, .also dahlias and other autumn flowers. MAUNGATUROTO. The April meeting of the Maungatnroto Women's Institute was held recently, when a chrysanthemum show took place, the winners in the different classes being: —Class 1: Champion bloom, Mrs. Ridling 1, Mrs. Borthwick 2. Class 2: Best three blooms, Mrs. Ridling 1, Mrs. Borthwick 2. Class 3: Best six blooms, Mrs. Ridling 1, Mrs. V. Cullcn 2. Mr. Collins gave an instructive talk on chrysanthemum culture, which was much appreciated. A musical programme was given by Mesdames Allen, Ridling, Borthwick, and Miss Constance Draper. Afternoon tea was dispensed, the hostesses being Mrs. Arnold Cullen, Mrs. L. Worthington and Mrs. Eager. WARKWORTH. The Warkworth Institute held a meeting in the Oddfellows' Hall, when the president, Mrs. Colville, was in the chair. Mrs. Roke, 'of Matakana, gave a demonstration of macrame cake baskets, slippers, shopping kit and sunshine purse. The competition was a decorated vase, there being numerous entries, and the first place was gained by Mrs. Ingam; second, Mrs. Carron. There was also a display of articles suitable for the thrift table. This was most interesting and instructive. An amusing guessing competition was won by Mrs. Haligan. Afternoon tea was served,, the hostesses being Mesdames Simpson, Ingam and Collins. GREENHITHE. The April meeting was held in the hall on April 20, when Mrs. Ashton presided. Mrs. McCallum was welcomed back from her recent trip to England. She presented the institute with a bell for the use of the president. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy from the Women's Institute to Nurse Crozier, who is seriously ill in the Auckland Hospital. Owing to heavy rain, 'Miss Gardner's demonstration on pottery was postponed, Mrs. Cotton giving a paper on her trip to Niue Island, and showing rubber brought back. A competition, "The Doings of Kate," was won by Mrs. Irwin. Articles made for the thrift table at the council meeting were shown. Arrangements for the forthcoming entertainment for the purpose of renovating the public hall came under consideration. Mesdames Cotton and Coulan were the tea hostesses. The social half-hour wound up the proceedings. WAIOTAHI. The meeting of the Waiotahi Women's Institute was to have taken the form of a garden party, but owing to bad weather the meeting was held in the hall. Most of the members were present, in a number of cases being accompanied by their husbands. After business had been dealt with, games were the order of the day, and a very enjoyable afternoon was spent. Prizes had been given for some of the games and the winners of these were:—Deck quoits: Women, Mrs. Looney; men, Mr. W. Looney. Ping-pong: Women, Mrs. Jeffery; men, Mr. J. Gardiner. Darts: Women, Mrs. Jessop; men, Mr. White. Mrs. Rau won the prize for the member with the largest family. There was also a treasure hunt for Easter eggs. Mrs. Burke rendered a song. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Grant, Malcolm and Seott.

ARARUA. At the last meeting of the Ararua Women's Institute held last Wednesday in the local hall, Mrs. E. Andrew interested members with a demonstration in raffia work. The roll call for the afternoon was "The Domestic Duty I Least Like Doing." The word-building competition arranged by Miss Flo Jones was won by Mrs. Andrew. The hostesses were Mrs. Geo. Morris and Miss A. Jones. GLEN EDEN. The Glen Eden Women's Institute held a meeting on Monday evening in the Public Library, Mrs. Hawkey presiding. Mrs. Morris, of Henderson, gave a demonstration of picture-framing. Miss Ellis, gave elocutionary items. The institute trading table did good business. The flower competition was won by Miss Brassington 1, Mrs. Naught 2, Mrs. Coker 3, and the winner in the crayon work competition was Miss Brassington 1 and Mrs. Hill 2. The delegates appointed to the council meeting in May were the president, Mrs. Hawkey, Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Watts.
