HIGH-PAID JOBS.
Your correspondent "Taxpayer" strikes the right note in suggesting need for 'business control of the Education Department, but he doea not strike it loud enough. We have hundreds, maybe thousands, of Government billets filled by men who receive between £400 and £600 per annum. These positions, country postmasterships, military posts, some railway offices, education jobs., and many others, do not, as we are generally led to believe, entail responsibility of any consequence. They are purely routine jobs, requiring only the ability to carry out the instructions of higher authorities and the Departmental code of rules. Can you visualise a trading concern paying such remuneration for similar service? No! One of the largest charges against a business, and one that is constantly being reviewed, is the wages bill, and it is overdue that the Government should review and reduce theirs. This is a matter the Associated Chambers of Commerce could take up with profit. VALUE RECEIVED.
