UNFORTUNATE WOMEN
TWO CHARGES OF VAGRANCY MUST KEEP AWAY FROM DRINK. After having come under police observation for some time, two women were arrested on Thursday on vagrancy charges. Both appeared in the Police Court to-day. Margaret Mary Young (28) denied that she was an idle and disorderly person who habitually consorted with undesirables.
Constables Mahood and Christiansen said that they had frequently seen accused loitering about hotels, drinking and associating with undesirables. "When I warned her some time ago she told me to mind my own business," said Constable Mahood.
Detective Sergeant Kelly said accused had several children, but they were taken from her some time ago and were now wards of the State. Accused did not maintain them. "If she was in the country she might be all right working, but she prefers to stay in town and associate with roughs and toughs," added Mr. Kelly. Young was convicted and remanded until April 7 for sentence, Mr. Cutten stating that in the meantime inquiries would be made by Major Gordon as to the possibility of getting Young into the country away from drink. "Your Worship will see by her list of previous convictions that she is drifting," said Detective Sergeant Kelly about Phyllis Bach (37), who admitted that she was an incorrigible rogue with a previous conviction for being a rogue and vagabond. She, too, had been associating with undesirables and drinking about city hotels. Drink was her whole trouble.
Bach, who said she had not been in trouble for five years, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. She was also prohibited.
