The sporran is the Highlander's purse. Before pockets were introduced into clothing, in the seventeen-hundreds, everyone had a little leather bag or pouch fastened to a strap worn round the waist. In this pouch, money and other small articles were carried. With the introduction of pockets, the pouches went out of use—except with wearers of the kilt, who had no convenient place for a pocket.
