PROBATION TEACHERS.

NOT ADMITTED TO COLLEGE. HELP FROM EDUCATIOX BOARD. Provided that the necessary approval can be obtained, satisfactory probationers not selected for admission to the Training College this year are to be retained for a second year at a wage of 15/ a week for actual working weeks. The Education Board came to this decision this morning. The chairman, Mr. A. Burns, said that there > were 21 students concerned, and the sum of £030 was to be proposed for the year's salaries. ' Before this scheme can be carried into effect, the board will refer it' to the Department, and the permission of the Audit Department must also be obtained to allow the board to spend its funds in this way.' If not, the Department is to give an assurance that it will bring forward validating legislation. A similar scheme is in force in Otago. The board received a memorandum from the Department stating that the Otago Board was retaining, for a second year a number of last year's probationers who were not accepted for admission to the Training College, and was making in each'case a nominal payment of £10 from the board's general fund. The Department also stated that it raised no objection to the proposal, but made it clear to the board that the persons so. treated were not to be called "probationers," and were to be given no understanding that - they would be admitted to the Training College in 1933. "They have set us an example in Otago," remarked Mr. Burns, "and I think that this board should do something like tliis. There is the added advantage of another year's training. At the end of that time they might be better teachers, and might be taken on by- the board." The Auckland Board might do more than the Otago Board had done, he added. The sum of £10 was not much. It was merely pocket money, and would be spent in fares. He thought that 15/ a week for the working weeks was a more reasonable amount.
