France and Italy Will Join With U.S.A. JAPS. FIRE ON NANKING. (United P.A.—Etatric TelegTaph—Copyriglilt) (Received 2 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 1. The Italian Ambassador, Signor de Martino, informed the State Department that his Government Avill co-operate fully with the United States in the Shanghai situation. The French Counsellor of the Embassy called at the State Department and confirmed that the French were making representations to Tokyo and sending a cruiser to Shanghai. President Hoover held a conference at the White House with the Secretary of State, Mr. H. L. Stimson. Mr. Stimson instructed tlie Consul-General at Shanghai, Mr. E. Cunningham, to co-operate with the League of Nations Commission in investigating the conditions at Shanghai. An official summary of the American forces ill China indicates that 14 war vessels, namely, one cruiser and 13 destroyers will be in Shanghai by the middle of the week, and .'SOOO soldiers and marines, aside from the complements which the war vessels comprise in the man power of each destroyer. The Navy Department was informed that a Japanese cruiser opened fire upon Nanking, compelling the commander of the destroyer Simpson, the only American warship at Nanking, to move his vessel out of the fire.
