STORE AND HOUSE BURNED.
FAMILY'S HURRIED ESCAPE. ELECTRIC SYSTEM FAULTY? (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAWERA, this day. The third fire within a week in the Opunake district occurred early yesterday morning, when Mr. Edward M. Reynolds' store and residence at Oaonui was destroyed. Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds and their daughter escaped in their night attire. Nothing was saved except several business ledgers and a cabinet of accounts. The fire apparently started in the ceiling of the shop, and it is thought that it was caused by the electric wiring. Mr. Reynolds bad been reading in bed the previous evening, but bad stopped owing to the flickering of the light. About 4 a.m. he was awakened by something falling and noticed the glare of the fire. The flames then had a strong hold. The building and its contents were insured in the Phoenix Office for £2000.
