OBITUARY.
EMINENT BOTANIST DEAD. Advice has "been received in Wellington of the death in Holland of Dr. J. P. Lotsy, a world authority on hybridism. The late Dr. Lotsy visited New Zealand a few years ago to study his subject and to confer with the Dominion's authority, Dr. L. Cockayne, a pioneer in the study of hybrids in botanv. Dr. Lotsy was primarily a botanist, hut his studies of hybridism covered a wide range. CHIEF MARE TERETIU. Mr. Thomas Murray (Mare Teretiu), a well-known and highly-respected chief of the Ngatimaru tribe, died at Kirikiri on January 20. Ho was for many years assessor in the Native Land Court, and travelled throughout the province with judges. He was a direct descendant of the founder of the tribe, and of Rautao, a noted fighting chief. His ancestors were amongst the first natives in New Zealand, who came in the canoes from Hawaiki. Deceased held great sway among the natives from To Aroha to Moeliau, 011 the Colville Peninsula. He was a prominent footballer in his early days. For many years past he was a member of the Bowling Club, also of the Masonic Lodge, Sir Walter Scott. A largely-attended tangi is being held.
