With the possible exception of Newmarket, building operations 'in the suburban districts of Auckland were considerably curtailed during the twelve months which ended December 31 last. Returns to hand indicate that in some instances the value of the peimits issued for the period was less than half of that the previous year.

The main items were the construction of three blocks of modern shops in Broadway, costing respectively £7390, £5800, and £3880. Alterations to the building of the Auckland Savings Bank accounted for £2990. For the previous year the permits issued were for a total value of £26,051.

In Mount Eden borough the permits issued totalled 225, the value being represented by £18,839. The items comprised nine dwellings ( £<343), four shops (£3200), 158 alterations (£6582), and 54 sheds ( £1714). In 1930, 277 permits to a total value of £48,340 were issued. One Tree Hill Borough Council issued 85 permits to a total value of £10,697, as against the 100 permits, valued at £35,000, issued in 1930. Last year's permits included authority for the con-, struction of six dwellings. The value of the 115 permits issued by the Onehunga Borough Council was £8422. A total of 133 permits, mainly for alterations and conversions, was issued by the Devonport Borough Council. The value was £0542. The permits issued for 1930 totalled 168, the value being represented by £18,672. Birkenhead Borough Council issued 44 permits to the value of £5514. Included were live dwellings ( £2500) and a fii e station ( £927). In Northcote borough 21 permits were issued to a value of £2374. r l lie outstanding item was the erection of the Presbyterian Church ( £1267). These comprised 17 houses ( nine businesses ( £2778), and 257 alterations (£9387). In 1930 363 permits to the value of £70,424 were issued.

In Takapuna borough 95 permits to the value of £16,891 were issued. These included eight dwellings (£6079) an:l additions to, two schools (£4917). For 1930, 154 permits were issued, the value being £30,146.
