HOLIDAY EMPLOYMENT.
Most local bodies have their intention of closing down the works which are being carried on under No. 5 scheme for one week. Is every person so wrapt up in their holiday plans that they do not give a thought to what this means, to every man on relief works 1 Surely this, if ever, is the time when tho provisions of the Act regarding the W* ment of sustenanee should be operated. It i» all very well for those who will never need relief work to talk about the demoralising effect of the "dole," hut if this cold-blooded deprivation of the weekly pittance is carried out I venture to say the effect of actual hunger will be far more demoralising and damaging to morale. It is doubtful, indeed, whether the Unemployment Board can in equity withhold this payment to thoee who are entitled to it. It seems to me merely common sense to suppose that if it is no available in one way it certainly should b e in another. If this is not done it simply raases the recent allocation of £15,000 a hypocntica gesture, because it will be retaining at t e same time the sum of, roughly, £30,000, ivhiC would otherwise have been paid out.
