MAGISTRATE REFUSES BAIL,
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
PALMERSTON N., this day.
Norman Robert Decke, a farm hand, aged 19 'years, appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, 8.M., to-day, charged with that on or about August 23, at Karere, he did murder Edward John Blakeway, a railway clerk, who was cycling to Palmerston North.
The police made application for a remand till November 10.
Counsel for accrued asked for bail under section 36£ of ■ the Crimes Act. This, he said, left the granting of bail for a charge of murder to, the discretion of the magistrate. The present case, he contended,'-was not one in which bail could not be given without permission of the Supreme Court.
The police strongly objected to the granting of bail. "We will be ready to proceed in a week," said Senior Detective Quirke, "unless special circumstances arise."
"I do not think bail should be granted in this class of crime," said the magistrate, who refused the application. A remand was granted.
Decke was arrested on Saturday afternoon. Edward Blakeway's body was found on the Longbush-Karere Road, five miles from Palmerston NortL, early in the morning. . He was lying near his bicycle, and when his body was examined it was found that there were at least four bullet wounds in his nose, chest and -wrist. ■ '
