MONEY BY CHEQUES.

TWO WREATHS ORDERED

Six charges of forging names to cheques and one of obtaining £7 S/ by means of a valueless cheque for £25 were brought against Herbert Helm, a labourer, aged 48, in the Police Court this morning. Detective Sergeant Kelly prosecuted. An undertaker in Mount Eden Road said that on September 23 accused went into his place to buy artificial wreaths. He said they were for his mother-in-law, and they were to be sent to Park Road. He asked -for a card to put on each wreath. Witness said the names, he thought, were "Lil" and "Bert." The value of the wreaths was 35/, and accused tendered a cheque for £6 5/ on the National Bank of New Zealand, Onelmno-a. Witness accepted the cheque and gave. £4 10/ change. He later ■delivered'the wreaths and found that they were not required at the place of delivery. There was no account at the bank in the name given on the cheque.

The manager of a Mount Eden dairy said accused-on October 19 called at the house door about 7.45 a.m., said Jus name was Williams, and that he wanted to pay an account. The amount was 16/4. -"He paid me .-with-, -a cheque for £2 drawn by G. Williams," said witness, "and I gave'him £1 3/2 change. Helm pleaded not, guilty, and wa§ committed for trial. Bail was refused.
