BOWLING.

FINAL CLUB OPENINGS.

MARRED BY COLD SHOWERS,

PLAYERS CHANGE THEIR COLOURS

(By TRUNDLER.)

Apparently it was too much to expect four fine Saturdays in succession during October, for all the clubs which opened last Saturday were badly let down in the matter of weather, cold squalls making the afternoon very unpieasant. Play was impossible on some-greens, and probably Mount Albert came, off best of all, as the weather just cleared in time for the sun to break out during >dic opening ceremonies, and the only shower of any conseciuence during the,.afternoon did nothing worse than hurrying on the afternoon tea a few minutes earlier than was originally intended. •

The executive of the Auckland Centre were again well .spread out, and probably the members will be glad to attend at their own clubs next Saturday, after being away for the whole month. Sympathetic reference was made at most functions to the recent deaths .of Messrs. J. W. Hardley and J. M. Thomson, but at the opening of the Eawhiti green the vice-presi-dent of the centre, Mr. Raymond Sheath, struck a new note in suggesting that the bowlers were also under an obligation to Mrs. Hardley and Mrs. Thomson for assisting their husbands on numerous occasions. Mrs. Bert Wilson may be appropriately included with her mother in recalling the hospitality so often dispensed at the "House > of Hardley" in Ring' Terrace, while it is only a couple of months since presided at afternoon tea at the Carlton pavilion, when she and her late husband entertained the party of .competitors in the Australian carnival, on the eve of their departure for Sydney and Brisbane.

While these and other ladies have so willingly undertaken the responsibilities of the more public functions, it was very pleasing to note that at the recent club openings the presidents havVmade grateful references to the assistance always received from the ladies. The Official Rink. It is a well-established custom that the club president 'skips the official rink against the leader -of (the visitors, but it has been interesting to see how the rink has been constituted at the various clubs. Te Papapa followed the custom of associating the president with some of his predecessors in th"at office, but at Mount Albert the president's rink comprised representatives of three of the oldest families in the district, while his probable successors in office assisted the official visitor from the centre. Nobody cares very much how the wins and losses are distributed on the opening day, so a little regard, for sentiment does no harm on these occasions, but it will be quite different next .Saturday, when all the players will settle down in earnest for their own club competitions.

There are no open tournament's this week, except the usual Labour Day functions, but next week there will be rinks at Ellerslie and Pukekohe on Tuesday, pairs at Henderson and St. Helier's on Wednesday and pairs at Epsom aljd rinks at Papatoetoe on Thursday. j Bowlers on the Move." " During the past four Saturdays the numerous official openings have entailed almost as much visiting as on pennant days, and certainly still more in respect to the number of clubs represented on each green. Next Saturday they will; all be at their own clubs again, preparatory, to the first round in the pennants, and when the results are published next Saturday night, showing which .club everybody is now playing for, there will be some surprise as to the large number who will be playing under new colours this season.

BtQb_ably the best-known players who laye. joiried",Carlton this year tare Mr. J. C. Duncan (Auckland) and Mr. C. H. de Launay (Epsom).

Mount Albert is being strengthened by the addition of Messrs. R. Wells (New Lynn), J. Somervell (Avondale) and S. Sharp (Edendale), besides several from further afield, including Messrs. R. Taylor (Napier), G-. Wilkinson (Hawera) arid H. McGregor (Kawakawa). However, the club has lost Messrs. F. and H. Tomlinson, who have gone to Ponsonby. . Changes at Balmoral, as compared with the former Dominion Road roll, have resulted in a net increase of six. New members include Messrs. J.. Vincent (Edendale) and W. Brownlee (Rawhiti), but a severe loss :j|-"involved in the departure of Mr. J. -Fy Benson for Napier. ■

Takapuna/has gained Mr. Norrie i% Bell (Hamilton).''the singles champion'of the Dominion,: as already mentioned, and the new members also include Mr. C. H. Bridge (Te Papapa). Auckland has several._ interesting changes, including the admission of Mr. T. Maxwell (Mount Albert), Mr. E. E. Pierce (West End),.: Mr. J. R,,Foster (Wangar nui), Mr..W-Smith, who has retired from Te Kuiti, c Mr. H. Linder, formerly of Stanley, but more recently of, Carlton, and Mr. C. Colbrook, a former member of the club who left about 25 years ago. The club has* lost a valuable member in Mr. J. F. Bailey, who lias gone to Tauranga. Most of the changes in all the clubs are due tofcchanges of residence, but it hasnot been announced'why Mr. Pierce has joined Auckland, and: it can only, be supposed that the incentive is the desire to join up.with the musical combination so well established in the parent club. With such members as Messrs., Colin Muston, G-. H. Woolley, C. B. Plummer and F. Prime already in the club, it ought now.to be possible for bowling functions to aim at something a little more classical thin the well-worn ditty, "Are we down-hearted?" West End has. enrolled Messrs. F. M. Delaney (Henderson), W." Watson (Whitiora). J. May (St. Helier's) arid J. Clarkson (Rocky Nook), but; has lost. Mr. J. Potter, who has gone back to Waitr-mata. and Mr. W. Knaggs.-who has left for-the South Island. - .Mr. J. Mcßeath (Epsom) has ■ joined Onehunga, and Mr. W. Wannan (Devonport) will be playing for Ellerslie this season.

An interesting addition to the roll at Rocky Nook is Mr. Duncan MeCnllougli. who was a member until:about 25 years ago,' when he was associated with, such veterans as Messrs. J. Bouskill and F. J. H. Ellisdon. , - • •

A' pleasing feature in recent/ club elections lias been the enrolment of so many first-year, players,. and when the returns are. all made up it will mot be a surprise if there is-a small net increase in membership over the whole centre, in spite of the depressing economic conditions prevailing lately; , . ' . . .
