SOUTH ISLAND TRUNK.
Merely to regard the possibilities of ther South Island Trunk railway from the consequent extension of settlement and the betterment of land along its route is much too narrow a view to take of the project as a paj'ing proposition. Its success as such wou more depend on the through traffic between Invercargill, Dunedin and Christchurch. he* move the handicap of the sea passage from Lyttelton northwards and the number o passengers between these cities and the or Island would be doubled. Presumably tne Railway Board, being business men, did no overlook this, and yet even a business .•nian when his salary is not dependent on t profits of the undertaking he manages can a verv obtuse individual at times.
