AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. RESULTS OF TWO MATCHES. The third match for the Auckland provincial billiards championship, the trophy being the Billiards, Ltd., Shield, was played at Messrs.' Billiards, Ltd.'s, showrooms yesterday afternoon, the two competitors being T. Tieruey, a youthful aspirant, and H. Ward, from Waihi. Until the 100 mark had been reached play was very even, Ward holding a slight lead. At the halfway mark, Tierney had a lead of' 47, the score being 252 to 205. Tierney maintained his lead by adding breaks of 20, 22, and 29. Ward replied with runs of 23 and 20. The score then, was: tierney, 400; Ward, 300. Tierney scored more consistently over the last hundred, and, although his opponent made strenuous efforts to overhaul his score, he ran out a winner by 23 points. The final scores were: T. Tierney, 500; breaks of 20, 22, and 29. H. Ward, 477; breaks of 23, 20, and 20. There was a larger gathering of billiards enthusiasts at the match in the evening between F. Taylor and L. G. Hemus. Taylor reached the 100 mark first with a slight lead over Hemus. Hemus had made a 21 and Taylor a 30. Then Hemus compiled a nice all-round break of 48, but Taylor replied to this performance by registering runs of 25 and 23. Vfnen Taylor had completed another break of 29 the scores stood: Taylor, 239; Hemus, 177. Then Hemus added a run of 23. Taylor was in again soon afterwards, scoring 31 before failing. The play slackened off slightly at this stage. Hemus failed to score at his next seven visits to the table, nis opponent gaining ground by adding a run of 25. Hemus then made runs of M, 26, and 21, the score being 431 to 420 in favour of Taylor. A further run of J» by Hemus gave him a lead of nine points.
