LEAGUE FOOTBALL

TRADING PLAYERS' PASSES.

PUBLIC STATEMENT REFUTED.

It was reported to the Auckland Hugby League last evening that during the past two Saturdays- the discovery was made that passes issued to. players had been transferred, and in some cases sold. One senior player had been actually detected in this wrongful practice, and a spectator admitted having bought the ticket. It was decided to write to the club to which the player belonged and to further consider the matter.

Taking strong .exception to a published allegation that the Northland and South Auckland Leagues were in any way dissatisned with their financial treatment by th: Auckland League in connection with tiie Northern Union Cup match, Mr. E. Stallworthy, who is the Northland delegate on the New Zealand Council, thanked the Auckland League for having sacrificed its usual club draw, and for all it had done to assist the Northland League in every possible direction. He wished to give, emphatic denial to an unfair insinuation. The secretary, Mr. Ivan Culpan, and the chairman, Mr. George Rhodes, pointed out that both Leagues knew all the ground charges and expenses before the match was arranged, and no official complaints were made. On the other hand both Leagues had expressed gratification at the result.

The chairman, called to the telephone, said the president of the South Auckland League had rung up asking that his League be dissociated from the published comments.

It was decided that after the first round matches of the Roope Rooster competition, which commences on Saturday, no player who has played in three senior A matches or more, will be eligible to play in the reserve grade knock-out competition of 1931, without the sanction of the management committee. ' WEDNESDAY CONTESTS.

CHIEF GAME CALLED OFF,

The Wednesday competition of the Auckland Rugby League was continued yesterday, and it was a pity that two matches scheduled for Carlaw Park were shifted to Victoria Park, where spectators encroaching on the fields spoil the games and give endless trouble to the referees. The defiant partisanship portion of the large crowd on this occasion resulted in the principal fixture being called off two minutes before time was called. The man with the whistle, who ablv controlled a very hard and keen game, had to deal with spectators trespassing on all lines, and on several occasions when stoppages occurred much delay was caused by people who invaded the ground. ' ~ , ' The first contest between City Markets and Town Board Rovers ended in a win for the former by 10 points to 8, the winners gaining a ' two-point advantage a few minutes before the end by aid of a penalty goal, after desperate efforts made by the Rovers were thwarted. Through a clever solo run by Peckham, Waterside Workers got an early try against Stonex and Stormonts, and the match resolved itself into a most tense battle for supremacy. The 'longshoremen were soon 'down 3—5, and then they forged ahead by means of a try which came by enterprising back play. Gardiner kicked a great goal. Stonex and Stormonts made determined bids to regain the lead for twenty minutes and much excitement prevailed. When the Purdv brothers made what appeared a rather vicious tackle of G. S. Brown, the Stonex back, the crowd swarmed on the field to such an extent that the referee gave up hope of being able to exercise control, and called the game off within two minutes of time. The match will have to be replayed :
