The State Governor, Mr. R. D. Sterling, has proclaimed martial law in the great flush oilfields in the east of Texas "by reason of the reckless, unlawful and criminal handling of the producing wells."
Troops to-day consequently began enforcing a compulsory reduction of 468,000 barrek of oil per day, or twothirds of the previous daily flow.
The move, which was made under the newly-enacted conservation laws, is expected to deplete the accumulations of stored petroleum and force the price up to a dollar or more.
Mr. Sterling followed the advice oE the Governor of Oklahoma, Mr. W. H. Murray ("Alfalfa Bill"), who found that the only way to check production was to call out the militia and close thousands of wells. A slight increase in price resulted in Texas, but a great stimulus was given to "Alfalfa Bill's" chance of obtaining the Democrat nomination for the next Presidential eleotion.
