WINTER BOWLING.

MATCHES ON SATURDAY.

NEW ZEALAND V. AUSTRALIA

COMMENCING NEXT WEEK

(By TRUNDLER.)

The weather just held up nicely for Saturday, so full greens were the order of the day, with playing conditions made almost perfect by three days of bright sunshine. A somewhat chilly breeze from the south-west was the only adverse feature, and on this account the Nomads were about the best off, for they found the Rawhiti green nicely sheltered. They were cordially welcomed by the club president, Mr. F. Stubbs, and this compensated for the defeat they experienced .at the hands of the local players, which seems to be their usual fate. They are hoping to play at Mount Eden next Saturday. Ed'endale made a gallant attempt to wrest the Edwin Stars from Ponsonby, but Parsons and his men were too good. With an entirely fresh team to support him, the Ponsonby skip will now be trying to repeat the performance of two years ago, when lie stood up to thirteen challenges, until finally Onehunga captured the trophies. _ However, W. H. Keatley (Rocky Nook) is the next challenger, and although the team is not yet announced it may be taken for granted that it will not include any amateurs. The winners will then meet R. J. Allely (Mount Albert), W. Denison (Dominion Road) and J. Wright (Epsom). It is a good many years since the Denison Pins have been to Carlton, so Geo. Carter's win on Saturday is of special interest. In the meantime Ellisdon's Devonport team may be congratulated on having secured three wins, it is very good to get any at all against the hot rinks that are playing for these trophies, now that the challenges are run off in the winter. The next challenger is H. Whittle (Grey Lynn), but his team is not yet announced. He wall be followed by J. Dick (Ponsonby), R. Sheath (Remuera) and R. Burrows (Waitemata). . Onehunga had no difficulty in winning the Jordan Pins, and will now meet H. Doherty (Otabuhu), followed by H. Dawson (Te Papapa). Other Fixtures Arranged. Mount Albert will hold a pairs tournament on Wednesday. The Oddfellows are playing a return match at Epsom next Saturday fortnight, September 5. For the same afternoon the Grammar School Old Boys' Association have accepted an invitation from Onehunga to play their annual match on the latter's green. This match was instituted two years ago, on the occasion of the diamond jubilee of the school, and it was played at Carlton, owing to the fortunate circumstance that the club president, Mr. Alf Coutts, was a Grammar Old Boy. Turning out a most successful function, it was repeated last year, but as no club has a Grammar Old Boy as president this year the Onehunga Club has claimed the pleasure of issuing an invitation, having no less than three Grammar Old Boys on the committee. These are Messrs. A-. R. Gatland and T. C. Schnackenberg, vice-presidents, and Mr. T. S. Bassett, past-president, and those who are able to play are requested to telephone to any of these during the next few days, or else to the secretary or treasurer of the centre, Mr. G. D. Gladding or Mr. A. H. Yeoman, who are both Grammar Old Boys. , , _ The Press match will be played on September- 19, not on the 12th, as originally cUT3II^6d« The secretary of the New Zealand Bowling Association has received a cablegram from the International Bowling Board, advising that the British bowlers, who are to tour Australia and New Zealand, will leave • England in September next year. This confirms the advices that had been received in Auckland some months ago, whereas the information that reached Australia was to the effect that they were leaving this year. So far as the Dominion is concerned, the most important consider* ation is that they will be here during the season when the Dominion tournament will be in Wellington, and not in Christchurch. . Mr. Tom Jamieson, a prominent member of the Victoria Club, Wellington, is spending a few weeks in Auckland. New Zealand Bowlers in Australia. The last of the 32 New Zealand bowlers who are to compete in the Australian carnival in Brisbane, commencing next Monday, left for Sydney last Friday, Messrs. W. Bremner and F. Kummer, by the Ventura from Auckland, and the five Wellington players by the Monowai from Probably it is just as well that the party were divided, for those who went by the Niagara last Tuesday will doubtless be playing in Sydney for a few days before the last seven arrive, and they are sure to be critically watched by the Sydney players, as well as those who will be assembling there from Victoria and the other States during the next few days. These will all be thinking that they have rather a soft thing on, when they try to find 16 in the Niagara contingent who are likely to win the Test and the interstate, whereas the position will alter considerably after to-morrow, when will be joined by the two additional players, as well as Messrs. Naylor and.Suhan, from Wellington. When trey get to Brisbane it will be still better, for Messrs. C. E. Hardley, H. S. Hill and A. J. Parker are already there, all sure to be selected, thus improving the prospects very considerably from what will appear in Sydney to-day. Further good news has arrived from Wellington. It seems that Mr. John Reniiie, a Christchurch skip, is on a visit to his daughter in Brisbane, and he will probably be eligible for the big matches. It also seems more than likely that somebody will want to pull out of the open rink championship, in order (that New Zealand may have Rennie's services. His rink qualified with, eight wins in the last Dominion tournament that was held in Christchttrch,, and they survived until the fifth round of post-section play, so he must be a strong performer. A year later he won his section in the pairs Wellington, but private business necessitated his return home, so he could not foaow it up. He is essentially a drawing player and will not drive under any circumstances, leaving all the driving to his third. His presence in Brisbane seems most opportune, for the only real .weakness m the party is a shortage of skips, and a great effort is sure to be made to get him into a rink. HILLSBORO' CLUB. The following were the results of the full-rink tournament final: — Allely, Rattray, Roylance, each 4 wins and 1 loss; Goldsmith, Firth, Stringer, H. Clarke, Fraser, each 3 wins and 2 losses; Pollard, Walker, J. Clarke each 2 wins and 3 losses; Trayes, Hollows, 1 win and 4 losses; Sillier, 5 losses. _, ~ Rattray and Roylance played off the tie, and Rattray won. Rattray and Allely play for the final at a time and place to be arranged. MOUNT ALBERT PAIRS TOURNEY. The following skips have entered for the Mount Albert Bowling Club's pairs tournament, to be held to-morrow: —Firth, Sunde (Glen Eden), Wright, Moors (Henderson), Fisher (Avondale), McCarthy (West End), Young (New Lynn), Gifford (Dominion Road). Livingstone (Onehunga), Garlick, G. Clarke, Muir, J. Thomas, Allely I (Mount Albert).
