SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The charity night given by the Athenian Club on Saturday .evening at the Operatic Society's rooms, Grafton Road, realised the sum of £62, which will be equally divided among charitable institutions,,

On Thursday last the monthly meeting of the Mount Albert W.C.T.U. took the form of a cradle roll afternoon. The superintendent of the cradle roll department (Mrs. Brodie), presented each child with a gift, while Mrs. Morgan Richards addressed the gathering on the subject of the responsibility of mothers to their children. Musical items were interspersed, and afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mrs. Halliwell and Miss Jones.

Mrs. J. Leggett (formerly Miss Norah Me Arthur) was the gueet of honour at a delightful afternoon tea given on Saturday by members of the Mercantile Auxiliary Club. A presentation of cutlery was made to Mrs. Leggett, and the opportunity was taken of conveying to her the good wishes of the membere. In thanking the girls Mrs. Leggett stated that her home would eventually be in Rodney, Scotland. Mrs. Leggett wore floral embossed chenille with black satin beaute. Amongst those present were: Mesdames A. F. McArthur, S. Wells, Misses Mona Boyd, F. Tapper, L. Leighton, I. Jennings, C. Ifwersen, Margery McArthur, Esme Ifwersen, Edna Thomas and Olive Spring.

A birthday party was held on Saturday night at the residence of Mrs. E. Carew, Point Chevalier, in honour of Mre. Carew. The dance rooms were decorated with Iceland poppies and daffodils. Among those present were: Mrs. E. Carew, powder blue georgette, with bridge coat to match, and Mesdamee Gallagher, Page, W. H. Shepherd, Woods, J. Moon, H. Miss Olga Jackson, of Allenby Road, Devonport, gave a kitchen afternoon at her residence on Saturday in honour of Mise Marjorie Kalaugher, whose wedding takes place this month. The drawing and dining rooms were decorated with spring flowers, the tea table being in tones of pink with softly shaded lighte. Mrs. Jackson assisted her daughter, and wore a fuchsia shaded georgette; Mise Olga Jackson was in green and white crepe de chme; Miss Marjorie Kalaughcr wore a navy blue satin ensemble, and felt to match. A bridge party given by Miss Dorna Reyburn took place last Wednesday evening in St. George's Bay Road. Miss Reyburn wore apple green georgette and lace. The prizes were won by Miss Lois Mahon and Miss Betty Wilson. Those present were:—Misses Helen Somerville. Another of the entertainmente organised by the entertainment committee of the Auckland Navy League, in conjunction with the Auckland City Council, for the men of the visiting Chilian naval training ship General Baquedano took place at the league's rooms in Customs Street West on Saturday evening. About 60 petty officers and men were entertained by girls' branch of the Auckland Navy League. Mrs. Shera acted as hostess, assisted by Miss Watt, of the ladies' committee. Dancing was enjoyed, with a short interval for supper.

A social and dance was held by the Albany Women's Institute in the Curonation Hall on Saturday. Songs, musical items and humorous items were given by Mesdames. Armstrong and Vincent and Messrs. Gardiner, Armstrong and Vincent, while Mesdames Broadbent, Collins and Schofield and the Misses Johnston and Sloanc took part in a sketch. A treasure hunt, arranged by Mr. Hooton, and a game of "musical parcels" filled in the intervals between the dances. The proceeds are in aid of the memorial library and federation funds.

The lounge of the Lyceum Club was filled with an enthusiastic audience last evening when the dramatic circle presented an entertaining three-act play, entitled "Second Love." Through a disappointment in love with a French dancer, the hero, Hugh Raine, strolle disconsolately around a park and by his sighing attracts the notice of a charming girl on a seat nearby. They talk and he tells her his troubles, and after a series of amusing scenes involving the loss of a priceless ruby ring, which belongs to his aunt and which he has been charged not to lose, he falls in love with the girl. Naturally the lost ring is found, Auntie is appeased, and the play ends in the good old "happily ever after" manner. As Hugh Raine, Mr. Jack Mackel did some exceptionally fine comedy work. He was well supported by Mr. A. D. Bathuret, who played the role of his light-hearted and helpful friend with ease. Aβ Nanda, Mrs. E. Verran was excellent, doing particularly good work in the scenes with Hugh. Miss Fay Reynolds made a charming French daiicer 'with a fascinating accent, and Miss Lyons did eome effective work as the aunt. Mr. J. Parsons was the butler. The play was produced by Miss Jot Bartley. At the conclusion, Mrs. J. C. Dickinson, acting-president, who presided, epoke appreciatively of the evenings entertainment, and' moved a vote of thanks to the players. During the evenin" orchestral selections were given by a trio comprising Misses Walls and Mr. Pawson. #
