LICENSING POLL.
POSTPONEMENT LIKELY
LEGISLATION THIS SESSION,
MR. FORBES' ANNOUNCEMENT
TRIENNIAL PRINCIPLE REMAINS,
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
Arising out of proposals by the New Zealand Alliance and the national council of the Licensed Trade, the Government will submit legislation to Parliament this session providing for the postponement of the licensing poll, which would have taken place concurrently with the general election.
This decision will in no way interfere with the principle of the triennial poll.
In making the foregoing announcement in the House this afternoon, the Prime Minister said the Government had been impressed with the economy that would be made. The serious problems facing the country demanded the earnest attention of all parties, and it would be only by united action that the recovery of normal prosperity would be expedited. The Government, therefore, welcomed the action taken by the 'two parties concerned in the licensing question and felt that the proposal would bo endorsed by a majority of the elector?.
"The fact that the truce has been practically arranged,'' added Mr. Forbes,
"is elf-'ir indication that men in responsible jiositions realise that nothing ehould be allowed to stand in the way of the utmost co-operation and goodwill at the present time on the part of all sections of the community."
