TROTTING.

AUCKLANDERS FOR SOUTH.

TEAM LEAVES TO-NIGHT,

A STRONG QUARTET,

Though, numbering but four the Auckland team of pacers going South this evening to compete at the Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting, which opens on Saturday, is a strong one, and with ordinary luck they should get a fair share of the stake money before the gathering concludes. Auckland owners have not patronised southern meetings nearly so strongly as South Island owners patronise meetings in Auckland, but invariably when horses do go to Addington from Auckland they pay tlieir way handsomely. Jewel Pointer and Great Ballin, who will represent F. Smith's stable, have been getting through their work in fine style. Jb'or a couple of days last week Great Ballin had to be eased up on account of slight heel trouble, but it soon got right, and on Saturday, when he worked a mile and a quarter, he moved along as well as ever he did. Great Ballin will contest both harness and saddle sprint events at the meeting, and he is a brilliant horse up to a mile and a quarter, and one who is bound to knock something off his handicap time.

Jewel Pointer has always shown better performances in a race than on the training track. He is a very fit horse at present, and a race like the National Cup on the final day will suit him nicely. His training work has been attractive, and such a consistent performer must have a chance in any race he contests.

Mountain Dell is being taken down by L. Mitchell. At her best she is a brilliant mare, but her recent track work has not been impressive, and she has not been putting that dash into her finishing efforts which one would like to see. It is stated there is a possibility of Mountain Dell being finished oil' for the meeting by J. Bryce when she arrives at Addington, and, if so, he would drive her in her engagements. It may be that the daughter of Blue Mountain King will show her best form in sprint races. Peter Pirate, the fourth of the Auckland contingent, will go in charge of J. •Shaw, who is re-entering the ranks of trainers, and will set up quarters in Christcliurch. Peter Pirate is a iiseful horse and a good stayer, and on his present handicap he should be able to give a good account of himself. When located in Auckland Shaw was at the top of the training profession, and being painstaking and attentive to his business he should do well in Christchurch. WEARING WELL. The veteraiv Woodvale looks in fine condition to bfe prepared for approaching racing. The chestnut is getting well on in years, but he can still display a good turn of speed, and his owner, Mr. Warnock, may pick up a stake or two with the son of Wildwood Junior. The same owner has placed Thelma Mack in work again. This mare in the autumn was showing distinct promise for a novice in her work, but she was unlucky in her races, and twice portion of her harness broke. A CUP PREPARATION. Gold Jacket, now handicapped on a very tight mark, will not have many opportunities to win races, as only in the tightest class can he hope to succeed. The one race which suits him is the New Zealand Cup. and he i < to be specially prepared for the £4000 stake which comes up for decision in November. For some time Gold Jacket has bQf u at Whangarei, where he has done a fair amount of road work, and he lias now returned to Alexandra Park, where L. McMahon will concentrate upon getting the son of Gold Bell ready. MR. BARTON LEADS. With his horses winning exactly £0000 in stake money during the season just closed, the Dunedin owner, Mr. G. J. Barton, easily heads the list of winning owners. Mr". H. F. Niccol is next with the good sum of £4965, and Miss E. Hinds third with £3043. Thirty-nine won £1000 or upwards, the most successful Aucklander being Mrs. I. E. Sweetapple, who received £4810, her winners being Warplane, Native Prince and Arachne. Mr. D. Brideson picked up £1455 with Jewel Pointer. The owners who gathered in £1000 or over are: Messrs. G. J. Barton, £6000; H. F. Niccol, £4965; Mies E. Hinds, £3043: Messrs. W. McDonald, £2914: H.
